19 Fallen (late post)

Nineteen government soldiers were killed while 10 others went missing in a gunbattle with the combined group of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Abu Sayyaf members on Tuesday, October 18, 2011.

According to ABS-CBN News, fighting erupted at dawn between a military special forces unit and MILF troops on the southern island of Basilan, said the regional military spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang.

Cabangbang said the military suffered 13 casualties, while 12 were wounded, it added. In its latest ABS-CBN News update, it now reached 19 casualties and 12 wounded.

“The encounter took several hours. You cannot discount the possibility that the relatives, cousins, grandchildren or neighbors, will join the firefight,” Lieutenant Colonel Randy Cabangbang said.

The military force admitted that the group of soldiers has entered a camp of the joint MILF and Abu Sayyaf forces.

According to Cabangbang, “We have received reports that allegedly our soldiers are being held hostage within the area of temporary stay of MILF in Al-Barka.”

"The AFP extends sincerest condolences to loved ones of 19 of our brave men who died in the clash in Basilan. Their death won't be in vain," Team AFP said in its official Twitter account.
